Roadkill Cactus

This little cactus has quickly become one of my quiet favorites — a gift from a friend about two months ago, tucked into a 4-inch pot with two small pieces. One has a soft curve to its shape, while the other is a small, rounded piece that sits close beside it.

When it arrived, it was completely unrooted, so we placed it in a mix of coco coir, pumice, and perlite to give it a light, airy start. It now lives in the bathroom, on a small counter beneath a west-facing window. The lighting there isn’t the brightest — it relies only on natural afternoon light, filtered and gentle — but it seems to suit this cactus’s calm pace perfectly.

Despite the softer light, both pieces have started looking plumper and firmer, a quiet sign that it’s adjusting well. We water only once the substrate is fully dry, letting it stay on the drier side between waterings.

When we first noticed roots forming near the bottom, we were genuinely surprised by how quickly it took off. Some plants take months to settle, but this one rooted faster than we expected — maybe proof that even a tucked-away corner can become a thriving space with the right balance of patience and care.

The Roadkill Cactus is still small, still quiet, but thriving in its own patient rhythm. Watching it root and strengthen has been a gentle reminder that growth doesn’t always have to be slow — sometimes, it just needs the right conditions and a bit of quiet attention.
